Plainfield Plumbing Experts’ Gift Guide to A New Toilet for Dad.

Every King Needs a Quality “Throne”

There’s a popular theory that the bathroom should be renamed “The Office” or “The Throne Room” in some homes. People spend a lot of time in the bathroom. In fact, on average, people spend about 70 hours on the toilet. That’s a lot of time. So why not make dad (and everyone else) a little more comfortable while they’re in the bathroom? A new “throne” can make all the difference when it comes to comfort in the bathroom.

Major Signs Dad Needs a New Toilettoilet

If folks are wondering whether it’s time to buck up and get dad a new toilet for father’s day, these signs may just seal the deal:
  • Retiring Age: Toilets should be retired after about 15 years. After constant use, even the hardiest toilets and their parts break down. It saves time and money to have a new toilet installed and prevents the annoying situation of having the toilet out of commission for regular repairs.
  • Cracking Under Pressure: Toilets, especially older models, are made of porcelain and ceramic. These aren’t exactly enduring materials, and while they should last the average 15-year lifespan of a toilet, the second they start cracking, it’s time to get that throne replaced. Cracks can only be filled for partial repairs; once they start developing, the integrity of the toilet is compromised permanently, opening the doors for flooding and total toilet breakdown!
  • Dad’s Wallet Hurts: No, seriously, wallets take a beating when toilets are getting on in years or experiencing problems. Repairs are expensive if they become frequent, and what’s more, older and broken down toilets waste water - up to 5 gallons of waste per flush! Think of all the money dad could be saving with a new toilet!

How To Choose a New “Throne” for the Bathroom

Toilets come in more than one shape and color these days! Granted, the pink toilet of the eighties has gone out of style - but there are plenty of other features to look for when shopping for the perfect throne.

  • Type: When picking a toilet, consider the model type. There are either one-piece units or two-piece units. Two-piece are more common, and while they are cheaper, they can be a pain to repair and install. Single-piece units are heavier but easier to clean and look nicer.
  • Comfort Features: These days, toilets are found with all sorts of comfort-focused features. The most economical is the oval-shaped toilet, which is more comfortable than a round one. Some toilets come with built-in bidets and heated seats! If that sounds out of the price range, consider an oval-shaped toilet bowl with a higher seat for an economical, comfortable solution.
  • Money-Saving Features: Newer toilets save more water than any model pre-2000. However, there are some models more efficient than others. A high-efficiency or “low-flow” toilet uses only 1-2 gallons of water per flush; the annual water savings alone make a new toilet worth the buy!

Tip: Never Forget to Measure!measure

When shopping for dad’s new throne, don’t forget to measure before buying! Toilets have to fit in the original “rough-in” space between the wall and the center of the waste pipe. Finding the suitable size replacement requires measuring from the wall behind the toilet to the middle of the rear-most bolt caps holding the old toilet down.

If shopping for a new toilet sounds intimidating, don’t worry! A local plumber can help with the measurements and finding the right model for the bathroom.
