How To Save Money and Energy This Spring

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), heating and air conditioning account for most of a home’s energy consumption. Its most recent information notes that in 2015, 51 percent of homeowners' energy bills were attributed to air conditioning and heating.

There are countless ways that homeowners can reduce their energy bills – not just to save money, but also to “go green” this March. Some of these measures include using ceiling fans, routinely changing the HVAC system’s air filter, and installing a smart thermostat.

Strategically Use Ceiling Fans

fans During the summer, homeowners love putting their ceiling fans to use. However, these appliances rarely see any action during the winter and spring. That’s where homeowners miss out on the perfect opportunity to get the most out of their central heating systems.

Warm air rises. That’s why during the winter, the second story is generally warmer than the bottom floors. So, when someone wants the temperature in their home to be warmer, they should turn on their ceiling fans, which will distribute the warm air.

Here are some ways to save energy by using this method:

  • Avoid having the ceiling fan on when no one’s in the room.
  • Keep the ceiling fan blades clear of dust, as this can compromise the home’s indoor air quality.
  • Keep in mind that the ceiling fan will not increase the room’s temperature; it will just make it seem warmer.
  • Close any windows, as this can allow warm air to escape the home.

It’s worth noting that while the “ceiling fan trick” works for many homes, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. If one feels colder than they did before the ceiling fan was turned on, they should consider turning off the fan and purchasing a space heater.

Change the Air Filter

The U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that a fresh, clean air filter can decrease the home’s energy consumption by 15 percent. That’s because the air filter prevents particles of dust, animal hair, and other debris from passing through the system.

One should change out their air filter around once every three months. However, they might consider changing the air filter more frequently based on:

  • Whether any animals live in the home
  • How many people are usually in the house
  • The size of the home and HVAC unit
  • The season
  • How often the HVAC system is on

When the home isn’t able to maintain a consistent temperature, the HVAC system won’t turn on, or the HVAC system appears to be overheating, this is generally a good sign to replace the air filter. A heater maintenance repair service can assess a home’s system and provide more specialized information.

Install a Smart Thermostat

In the digital age, most in-home appliances have smart home functionalities. Many homeowners are installing smart thermostats, which:

  • Limit how much energy the home uses
  • Lasts longer than traditional, non-smart thermostats
  • Give specialized readings through apps
  • Can be controlled remotely

Many big-name companies have their thermostats out on the market, including Nest, Honeywell, and EnergyStar. These devices are generally easy to install and only need a power source and Wi-Fi.
